Leo R. Mierzejek

Leo R. Mierzejek, 87 of West Deer Township, died peacefully surrounded by his family on June 5, 2017. He was born July 19, 1929 in Taylor, PA to the late Frank E. and Elizabeth (Krupovich) Mierzejek. Leo was a 1947 graduate of West Deer High School. After high school Leo was went on to play professional baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics from 1948 until the time he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. He served his country and was discharged as a Sergeant First Class. He then went on to work for Bell Telephone for over 45 years working as a Test Deskman. A member of Transfiguration R.C. Church, Russellton, a life member of West Deer VFD#1 Leo joined the fire company in 1959. He has been an active member up to his passing, holding all of the Line Officer Positions except Chief and all of the Executive Board positions, remaining on the board the majority of time he has served his community.  He also was a member of the American Legion Post 593, West Deer. Leo coached the legion baseball team as well as the West Deer Little League teams. He was a volunteer when Transfiguration built the School.  He was the former president of the Telephone Workers of PA, Local 57, Western Division. His joys included fishing with his son in Alaska, spending time with his friends and especially spending time with his wife and family.

He is survived by his loving wife, whom he married April 26, 1954, Barbara J. (Bowers) Mierzejek, his children Thomas L. Mierzejek at home, Marcia A. (William) Macdonald of Lovettsville, VA, Jan M. Roth of Brackenridge and Christopher (Beverly) M. Mierzejek of Anchorage, AK, grandchildren Samantha Mierzejek of Boise, ID and Emmelia Macdonald of Brooklyn, NY and sisters Elizabeth “Betty” Pawlowski and Eleanor DiSanti both of West Deer.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Steven R. Mierzejek and his grandson Thomas Mierzejek.

Family will receive friends Thursday from 2-8 PM in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer where funeral services will be conducted 10 am on Friday with the Rev. James P. Holland, officiating. He will be privately buried with full military honors in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions should be sent to the West Deer VFD #1, 1520 Saxonburg Blvd., Tarentum, PA 15084 in Leo’s name.
