Eugene "Gene" Vaerewyck Obituary

Eugene (Gene) Vaerewyck, (90), formerly of pueblo, CO, passed away at his son’s home on Nov 2, 2023. He was born in Mishawaka, IN.

Gene attended St. Bavos grade school and Mishawaka high school. He was drafted into the US Navy and served as a radioman on the destroyer USS Hollis and the repair ship USS Krishna out of Little Creek Naval Base, VA. After discharge from the Navy, Gene received a bachelor’s degree in physics from the Indiana Institute of Technology. He moved to Trenton, NJ to work for RCA and met his wife, Janice. They moved to Murrysville, PA where he worked for Westinghouse Research for 20 years and was awarded 9 patents.  During that time, he earned a Master’s degree in astronomy from the University of Pittsburgh. He went to work for GTE in Albuquerque, NM and later ILX Lightwave in Bozeman, MT. He was a certified gemologist and helped in the acquisition of many gems in the Carnegie Museum and Smithsonian collections. They retired in Pueblo West, CO. He was a scout leader for 20 years. His hobbies included amateur radio and woodworking.

Gene is survived by his siblings Larry and Sally, children Janine and Gerry, 4 grandchildren Katherine, Robert, Joseph and Richard, and 3 great grandchildren Maverick, Elliot and Ben. He was preceded in death by his parents Janet and Richard, his sister Shirley and his wife Janice.

Burial will be with military honors at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in the spring.

At Gene’s family’s request he will be buried with full military honors at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil, this spring.
