Gertrude (Doettlinger) Sallade, aged 98 years, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025 at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Richland Township, with family by her side. Gertrude was born August 4, 1926 in Kirchdorf, Austria to the late Ernst and Paula (Kammerer) Doettlinger and lived there until July 1947. During WW II the U.S. Army engaged young Gertrude as a German/English translator. While assisting the U.S. Army she met an American soldier, Wayne Sallade. They married in Austria before traveling to the U.S. with their newborn son. She returned to Austria numerous times to visit with family she dearly missed. Gertrude loved the mountains of Austria and was always grateful for the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania. She raised her three children, Leroy, Evie and Bill, in Harwick, before moving to Frazer Township in 1970. She loved her many dogs, feeding the deer and birds, working in her beautiful yard, caring for her home, solving German crossword puzzles, enjoying long walks, crocheting, and spending time with her family and friends. Her lively spirit and sense of humor will be missed beyond measure by many.
She is survived by her children, Leroy (Beth) Sallade of Medford, NJ; Evie (Don) Varshine of Cranberry Township and Bill (Bonnie) Sallade of Gridley, CA, 8 grandchildren, Chris, Jeff, Melissa, Kimberly, Stephen, Michael, Chad and Shelley and 16 great-grandchildren, her nephews, Ernie and Mark Doettlinger, a sister-in-law, Vivian Sarniak of Harwick, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Sallade, in 1991 and her brother Ernst Doettlinger in 2016.
Friends will be received Saturday from 2 pm until the time of the service at 4 pm in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, her grandson the Rev. Chris Sallade, officiating. She will be privately laid to rest next to her husband in Walter Chapel Cemetery, Indiana Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in her name to The St. Barnabas Free Care Fund or to The Humane Society.
