Helen S. (Swaiko) Shurina, 99 of Curtisville, West Deer Township, died peacefully on Monday November 4, 2024 at her home. She was born October 23, 1925 in Bairdford, West Deer to the late Charles (Wasil) and Helen (Herich) Swaiko Helen grew up in Bairdford and has live in West Deer all of her life. She worked at Glenshaw Glass and retired from the US Post Office on October 31, 1986 after 22 years of Service. Her faith was foremost in her humble life and it showed in her love and kindness to all. She was a devoted member of St. Michaels Orthodox Church, Curtisville. She pinched a lot of pierogis there and always brought a large pot of soup and apple bread for all the workers. She was a member of the Russian Brotherhood Organization of the USA. She was a kind and loving homemaker who enjoyed caring for her family. She was an excellent baker and cook and was happy to make her halupky and pierogis for her family to enjoy. She enjoyed fishing and dancing with her late husband. She liked gardening, flowers, doing embroidery and jigsaw puzzles and watching sports on TV. Her greatest pleasure came from spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors to cherish her memory are her children Darlene, Bonnie and Joseph (Leanna) Shurina and Ann Marie (Tim) Rettig; grandchildren Heather (Brent), Christy, Jessica (Dan), Joseph and Sarah, great-grandchildren Elena, Thomas, Delanie, Joseph, Noah, James, Benjamin and Grayson.
Besides her parents Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years Joe Shurina. She was also preceded in death by all her siblings; Mary Kokoruda, John, Charles, Alex, Michael, George, Steve and Richard Swaiko, Irene Weischedel and His Beatitude Metropolitan Herman (Swaiko) who passed on September 6, 2022.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, where parting prayers will be conducted Thursday 9:30 am followed by Funeral Services at 10 am in St. Michaels R.O. Church, Curtisville, with the Rev. John Parker, officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Township.
