John F. Sofko, 73, of Buffalo Township, died unexpectedly in his sleep on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at his residence in Sarver. He was born in February of 1952 in Natrona Heights to the late John and Anna (Medved) Sofko. John grew up in West Deer (Superior), graduating from the first class of Deer Lakes High School in 1970, where he met his high school sweetheart, Beverly. As a fun fact, in his senior year, he joined the first ever Deer Lakes volleyball team, earning the MVP title for the 1969-1970 school year. Following high school, he attended Penn State New Kensington, then went on to the Pittsburgh Technical Institute, where he earned his Associate Degree in Mechanical Drafting. He went to work at Freeport Brick Company and then later as the manager at Free-Ma-Die Tool and Die Company in Kittanning, eventually becoming president of the company. Later, he became self-employed, managing a portfolio of rental properties.
John married his high school sweetheart, Beverly, 48 years ago in June of 1977. They enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren. John loved building and remodeling and could fix anything; he actually built his own home in 1981. He also loved his classic and antique cars (especially Corvettes), gardening, hunting, fishing, cooking, and woodworking. His greatest joys were being with his grandchildren – mentoring, teaching, and cheering them on in academics and in sports – and spending time with his wife of 48 years, Beverly.
Survivors include his wife Beverly A. (Stecz) Sofko, his children John P. and wife Carolyn Sofko (Swauger) of Buffalo Township, and Channing A. Sofko and her husband, Gordon Spahr, of the Washington DC area. John is also survived by his grandchildren William J. Sofko, Luke T. Sofko and Laurelin R. Sofko. The family would like to thank the Buffalo Township Police Department and Freeport EMS for their kind and compassionate assistance.
At John’s request, the viewing and burial were private. Arrangements were entrusted to the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Freeport EMS at 400 Market Street, Freeport, PA 16229. View obituary online and leave condolences at www.siwicki-yanickofh.com/obituary/John-Sofko
