Michael F. Cavanaugh, 78 of West Deer Township, died Thursday November 21, 2024 at UPMC Passavant with his family by his side. Mike was born November 12, 1946 in West Newton to the late Francis M. and Pauline M. (Makutta) Cavanaugh. Mike grew up graduating from West Newton High School in 1964. Following High School served his country in the US Airforce during the Vietnam war. He then went on to work in Hazardous Waste Removal for 5 years and then worked as a Mechanical Testing Technician for Alcoa Technical Center for over 30 years, and also worked as an EMT for West Deer EMS for about 10 years then for UPMC St. Margarets as a Patient Care Technician working there for 5 years. Also was a CPR Instructor for about 5 years. He was a member of East Union Presbyterian Church, West Deer as well as a former member of West Deer VFD #2. Mike served his community as well as a West Deer Township Supervisor as well as a member of the Deer Lakes School Board. He enjoyed woodworking, could fix anything, enjoyed rock climbing as well as sky diving, although is greatest love was his family.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years Patricia A. (Fyala) Cavanaugh, his children Rachel A. (Corey) Lasher and Nathan P. (Lexy) Cavanaugh both of West Deer, his grandchildren Aidan, Raelyn, Logan and Lucas, siblings Karen H. (Theodore) Kondos of Elizabeth, Estelle Albright of Zionsville, IN, Mary E. (Bernard) Bobnar of Ellicott City, MD, Stephen P. (Susan) Cavanaugh of Blairsville, GA, Margaret A. (William) Roesch of Chetenne, OK, Gordon F. (Annette) Cavanaugh of Tacoma, WA and Susan M. (Steven) Borland of Hagerstown, MD.
Besides his family he was preceded in death by his brothers John J. “Jack” Cavanaugh and Thomas E. Cavanaugh.
Friends will be received Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, where a private funeral service will be conducted. He will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 2835 E.
