W. James Legge, Jr. Obituary

Rev. W. James Legge, Jr. D.Min., 82 of Slippery Rock, formerly of West Deer Township, died Sunday December 8, 2024 at PAM Specialty Care at Heritage Medical Center, Beaver. He was born April 24, 1942 in Pittsburgh to the late W. James and Jessie (Mungall) Legge, Sr. Dr. Legge grew up and in the Monroeville area graduating from Gateway High School. Following high school, he went to IUP to received his bachelor’s degree then on to the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for his Masters and Doctorate of Divinity. Dr. Legge began his ministerial career at the First Presbyterian Church of Tarentum as a student pastor then on to Clymer and Penn Run Presbyterian Church, then serving several churches in Delmont, Boswell and as the chaplain at Pitt Johnstown. He then came to Bull Creek Presbyterian Church, West Deer serving as pastor for over 30 years, then Steeple on the Beach, Deerfield Beach, FL, before he retired. Dr. Legge was active in the following organizations, Allegheny Valley Association of Churches, Habitat for Humanity, the Hope Center of Allegheny Valley and Camp Crestfield. Dr. Legge’s greatest love was for his family, friends, trains, puppets and leading Religious Retreats to the Bahamas.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Charlotte Mae (Werner) Legge, his children W. James (Stacy) Legge, III of Spanish Fort, AL and Charlene H. (Charles) Heydon of Longview TX, grandchildren Charlynne Foxworthy, Brittany (Kenny) Hudson, W. James Legge, IV, Abigail Legge, Danielle Heydon and Charles J. Heydon. His great-grandchildren Logan M. Hudson and Luke W. Foxworthy, his brother Russell S. (Sandy) Legge of Pittsburgh, his Uncle Frank (Gaynor) Legge of TX and his aunt Thelma Gates of Monroeville.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother H. Nelson Legge.

Friends will be received Thursday from 3-7 pm in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 am with the Rev. Ellie Johns-Kelley, officiating. He will be privately laid to rest in Allegheny County Memorial Park, McCandless Township.
