Walter P. Popendieker, 88 of Pittsburgh, formerly of West Deer Township and Blawnox, died Monday October 2, 2023 at the Southwestern Veterans Center, Pittsburgh. He was born September 8, 1935 in Shelbyville, IL to the late Frederick P. and Lillian M. (Vogel) Popendieker. Walt grew up in Mattoon, IL graduating from Mattoon High School in 1953. Walter served his country in the US Army, stationed in El Passo, TX achieving a rank of Sargent. He moved to Blawnox to work as a draftsman for the former Blawnox Steel then worked for Westinghouse working for over 25 years. Later in life he worked for 1st Student as a school bus driver and worked as supporting staff at the Siwicki-Yanicko Funeral Home. Walt loved people, sports and was a life member of the Owl’s Club Russellton, a life member of the Moose in Mattoon, IL and was a member of the former West Deer Lions Club. He enjoyed bowling, watching sports and following his grandchildren’s sports, though he loved his wife, children and grandchildren mostly.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years Barbara L. (Knox) Popendieker of Avelon, sons Kieth (Barbart) Popendieker of Avelon, Sean (Nancy) Popendieker of the South Side, his daughter Jackie (James) Broson of IL, 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Donald Popendieker, his brothers August “Bud” Popendieker and Harry D. “Shorty” Popendieker and his infant sister Lillian Popendieker.
The family invites friends and family to a celebration of Walter’s life on Saturday April 6th from 1-5 PM at the Owl’s Club, Main Street, Russellton, PA 15076. Arrangements were entrusted to the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer Township. He will be buried with full military honors in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.
